Hamlets' openness to pluralism earns special recognition

IMOGIRI, Indonesia (UCAN): About 700 students from across the country have declared two neighboring hamlets in Yogyakarta a "national village" for their openness to pluralism.
The youths, all studying in schools and universities in Yogyakarta Special Province, awarded Kedungjati and Nogosari hamlets the distinction on May 19 as the highlight of a three-day camping activity in Nogosari. Both hamlets are in Imogiri subdistrict, Bantul, about 430 kilometers southeast of Jakarta.
Pesan Trend Budaya Ilmu Giri, a pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Nogosari, ran the camp to commemorate the 100th anniversary of National Awakening Day, May 20. About a month earlier, the pesantren distributed invitations asking students to participate in the event, which featured interreligious, inter-ethnic and inter-cultural dialogues. Read more ...
